    Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

    1. Apply the basic principles of micro and macroeconomics
    2. Apply the basic principles of management
    3. Utilize graphs, spreadsheets, and/or other basic quantitative techniques employed in the field
    4. Gather relevant information, evaluate it critically and communicate it effectively in written and oral forms
    5. Compare and evaluate contending economic policy debates at the local, national and/or international level

    Economics Department Course Retake Policy

    • For the purpose of this policy, "course" refers to any course offered by the Economics Department that is used to satisfy the requirements of any major or minor offered by the department (economics [ECO], management [MGT]).
    • A student may repeat a course to replace a failing grade, grade of X, indicating withdrawal from course, or to improve the student's grade point average when the first enrollment resulted in a passing grade.
    • A student may enroll in a course twice. A third or subsequent enrollment in that course shall be with the approval of the Economics Department only and contingent upon available space in the course after all student registration occurs.
  • * Provide summary of all proposed changes AND justification for each change.

Summary of proposed changes: Add ECO 300 as a required class in the economics core sequence for all BUSE majors. The number of credits required for the economics core sequence will increase from 24 to 27.

    Justification:

    • Intermediate macroeconomics is important to adequately equip BUSE majors to understand the larger domestic and international macroeconomic environment where large and small businesses and corporations operate. BUSE majors need to be able to understand relationship among variables, and the transmission mechanisms of economic policy to the local, national, and international levels.
    • Organizations and human resource managers must make decisions under current macro conditions. The ability to critically understand/evaluate various theoretical frameworks to develop a working model of the macroeconomy for decision making is fundamental.
    • Students pursuing graduate studies/MBA are at a disadvantage if they do not take Intermediate Macreoconomics compared to students from other schools.
    • This change will bring consistency between SUNY Cortland's BUSE curriculum with ther three SUNY schools that offer a Business Economics major (Albany, Oneonta, and Potsdam). All require the sequence: ECO111+ECO311 and ECO110 +ECO300.
    • Our recent assessment of Student Learning Outcome 4 -- Compare and evaluate contending economic policy debates at the local, national and/or international level indicated that BUSE students' performance in that area needs improvement. Students were only at Target for the Income and Wealth Inequality area.  The other 4 current economic policy areas – Hourly Wages, Minimum Wage, Corporate Taxes, and Government Assistance – were below the department's 70% threshold. The content assessed in LO4 is introduced/reinforced in ECO 105- Political Economy and Social Thought and ECO 110 – Principles of Macroeconomics. According to our curriculum mapping, all concepts in LO4 would be further emphasized/mastered in ECO300 – Intermediate Macroeconomics. We hope this change will enhance our BUSE majors' performance in LO4, and bring it to par with all other LOs for the major.
