    • select the Import option (located above in this pane);

    • select your desired catalog;

    • filter the courses by prefix. Click in the Filter by Field box and choose Prefix;

  • Catalog course description*

    A sociological exploration of gender as a organizing force in society. Examines the production and reproduction of gender difference and inequality. Considers how gender difference and inequality are produced and reproduced at the individual level as well as at the institutional level. Gender inequality within the institutions of the media, work, family, education, and politics will be discussed.

The catalog course description should be concise - one to three brief sentences or phrases are usually enough. A complete sentence is not always necessary. The catalog course description should not use abbreviations unless there is a standard acceptable abbreviation. The catalog course description should not include phrases such as: “The students will…” or “This course focuses on…”.

    Sociology of Gender is being changed from a 400-level course to a 300-level course. It is being moved to a 300-level course because it is a survey of the subfield of the Sociology of Gender, not a highly specialized advanced examination of a more focused topic. It is appropriate for sophomores as well as juniors and seniors. 

    SOC 401 must be deactivated in catalog and banner alongside this approved proposal. SOC 401 will no longer be an active course number for our department. The new course number is SOC 323.

    Remove SOC 100 as prerequisite as it has been deactivated.

    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Explain how gender is an organizing principle in the social world at the individual, cultural, and structural levels.   
    2. Describe gender through the lens of intersectionality, focusing on social factors such as race, class, and sexuality. 
    3. Explain the sociological perspective that gender is socially constructed.  
    4. Summarize how conceptions about gender create and enforce systems of gender difference and inequality.   
    5. Identify major theoretical frameworks that are used to understand the gendered nature of human life. 
    6. Overview the history of feminism and different feminist perspectives.

  • 1.  All WI courses must ask students to write the equivalent of 15 typed pages, with two or more pieces of writing submitted in multiple drafts. Upper division WI courses may use a single project toward this 15 page minimum. (15 typed pages is equivalent to 3,750 words total as a minimum.)

  • 1A. Please describe the writing assignments for this course, noting page (or word count) and the number of drafts (including the final draft) for each assignment.

  • 2.  In WI courses, revision must be REQUIRED for at least some writing assignments. Revision must be based on an instructor’s feedback on their students’ writing through comments, conferences, or both. Students must be required to use instructor feedback to revise their work, as opposed to being invited or allowed to revise. Some examples of considering instructor feedback could include process notes, response to reviewers memos, reflections, conferences, or track-changes comparisons between drafts.
