    Introduction in physical education teaching methodology for the student to study, practice, and acquire basic teaching skills applicable to K-5 physical education instruction.

    Based on department retreat and external review we needed to provide a better K-12 preparation for our students. We have adjusted this course from K-12 to K-5 and added in a secondary methods course. These changes highlight that.

    Original Title: Instructional Strategies in Physical Education

    Original course description:  Aid students in gaining understanding, knowledge and experience in the design of appropriate learning experiences, and the use of effective pedagogical skills in presenting a K-12 physical education curriculum aligned with state and national standards and to prepare them for field experience in K-5 schools.

    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Design safe instruction that shows knowledge of individual and group motivation and behavior, is developmentally appropriate and meets State and National benchmarks, standards and laws.  
    2. Create and use appropriate instructional cues, prompts and demonstration, design developmentally appropriate learning environments and select appropriate teaching strategies for K-12 students. 
    3. Apply motor development, language acquisition and literacy development theories and practices of children in lesson planning and rubric design.

    1. Design physically and social-emotionally safe instruction that shows knowledge of individual and group motivation and behavior, is developmentally appropriate, and meets State and National benchmarks, standards and laws.

  • 1.  All WI courses must ask students to write the equivalent of 15 typed pages, with two or more pieces of writing submitted in multiple drafts. Upper division WI courses may use a single project toward this 15 page minimum. (15 typed pages is equivalent to 3,750 words total as a minimum.)

  • 1A. Please describe the writing assignments for this course, noting page (or word count) and the number of drafts (including the final draft) for each assignment.

  • 2.  In WI courses, revision must be REQUIRED for at least some writing assignments. Revision must be based on an instructor’s feedback on their students’ writing through comments, conferences, or both. Students must be required to use instructor feedback to revise their work, as opposed to being invited or allowed to revise. Some examples of considering instructor feedback could include process notes, response to reviewers memos, reflections, conferences, or track-changes comparisons between drafts.
