Prerequisite: EXS 397 Exercise Physiology will continue to be the prerequiste course but will additionally require a C- grade or better to take EXS 438. Exercise physiology is important foundational knowledge assessed in most fitness certifications. One requirement of accreditation with the National Strength and Conditioning Association is that we must have a 70% pass rate for first time takers of their Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist test. Exercise science, which encompasses exercise physiology, accounts for about 55% of the Scientic Foundation portion of the test (part 1) with Practical and Applied portion of the test (part 2) includes fitness assessment and programming for cardiovascular dominate sports and energy system training. A passing score is considered a 70 on both parts of the exam. By elevating the prerequiste to a C- or higher in EXS 397, students will be more prepared for the demands of EXS 438 and increase their ability to be successful on the certifying exam.
This would effect about 7% of SCHP students and 13% of EXSC students. No CCH students have taken EXS 438 within the last few years. EXS 438 is an elective for EXSC and CCH students and required for SCHP students. SCHP students would have at least two semesters to retake EXS 397 so they could take EXS 438 prior to their internship.
Prerequiste of "or PED 397" was removed as it is no longer a course.
